✅ Does This Course Satisfy the State Requirement?
This course provides 4 approved hours toward the 16 credit hours a single-category Virginia agent must complete each biennium, or the 24 hours required when you hold more than one category. This is the 4-hour ongoing long-term care insurance Partnership training course, for producers who have already completed initial long-term care training and need the recurring hours. It is general credit toward your state total, so it does not satisfy the separate 3 credit hours of insurance ethics, which may include Virginia insurance law and regulations. It does not satisfy the whole requirement on its own.
If you hold more than one license category your requirement is 24 hours rather than 16, with a minimum of eight hours in each category you hold. No more than 75 percent of your required credits may come from courses provided by insurance companies or agencies.
✅ Virginia Continuing Education Requirements
Under Virginia Code § 38.2-1866, an agent licensed in a single license category completes 16 hours of continuing education each biennium. An agent holding licenses in more than one category completes 24 hours, with a minimum of eight credit hours in each category held. Of the total required credits for each biennium, three credit hours must be in insurance ethics, which may include insurance law and regulations applicable in the Commonwealth.
- 16 hours per biennium for a single license category
- 24 hours per biennium if you hold more than one category, with at least 8 hours in each category held
- 3 of the total credits must be in insurance ethics, which may include Virginia insurance law and regulations
- No more than 75 percent of required credits may come from courses provided by insurance companies or agencies
- Single categories include life and annuities, health, property and casualty, personal lines, and title
Virginia exempts agents licensed during the final 13 months of a two-year period from the requirement for that biennium, under § 38.2-1871. Nonresident agents who meet their home state's requirements and consultants who satisfy the requirement for each license category held are also addressed there. Check your own license record rather than assuming an exemption applies.
How this course helps: This 4-hour course contributes 4 of the 16 credit hours a single-category Virginia agent must complete each biennium, or the 24 hours required when you hold more than one category. It is approved in the Long-Term Care category. It does not complete the renewal on its own.
✅ When Do Licensees Renew?
Virginia agents renew on a two-year biennium. Confirm your own biennium end date on your license record, because it is set from your licensing history rather than from a single statewide date.
✅ How to Renew Your Virginia License
- Confirm your license categories and your biennium end date on your Virginia license record.
- Work out your total: 16 hours for a single category, or 24 hours with at least 8 in each category if you hold more than one.
- Complete the 3 required ethics credits from an approved ethics course, and the remaining hours in the categories you hold.
- Complete every hour before the last day of your biennium, and allow provider reporting time before that date.
- Check your Virginia CE transcript and confirm each course posted in the correct category.
- Complete the Bureau of Insurance renewal for your license and pay the applicable fee.
- Confirm your license shows active status with an updated expiration date, and keep your completion certificates.
Virginia expects the required credits to be completed within the biennium. Do not rely on a grace period; check your own license record for your biennium end date and finish ahead of it.
✅ What You Will Learn
- Restate the activities-of-daily-living and cognitive impairment benefit triggers and apply them to real claims
- Compare the settings and levels of care a policy pays for and explain the cost difference to a client
- Explain how the dollar-for-dollar asset disregard protects assets from Medicaid spend-down and estate recovery
- Evaluate inflation protection options and show a client what each one is worth over time
- Apply suitability and replacement standards before recommending or replacing a policy
- Describe the producer's ongoing duties once a Partnership policy is in force
✅ Course Content Overview
Hour 1: Refresher on the long-term care landscape: the settings of care from home care through assisted living to skilled nursing, how long care typically lasts, what it costs today, and why Medicare's skilled nursing benefit is not long-term care coverage. The hour closes by placing the Partnership program in context as the bridge between private insurance and Medicaid.
Hour 2: Benefit triggers and policy mechanics in practice: the activities-of-daily-living trigger and the cognitive impairment trigger, elimination periods, benefit periods and daily or monthly benefit amounts, pools of money versus fixed benefit designs, and how inflation protection changes what a policy is actually worth at claim time. The hour works through claim scenarios where the trigger is contested.
Hour 3: The Partnership asset disregard in depth: how dollar-for-dollar protection is earned, how it is counted at Medicaid eligibility, how it interacts with estate recovery, and what reciprocity between participating states does and does not guarantee when a client moves. The hour closes with the disclosure a producer must make about Partnership status.
Hour 4: Suitability, replacement and the producer's continuing duties: assessing whether long-term care coverage is suitable for a client's assets and income, the standards that apply before replacing an existing policy, the tax treatment of qualified policies and premiums, and the recordkeeping and reporting a producer carries once the policy is in force. The hour ends with the ethical obligations that outlast the sale.
