β Does This Course Satisfy the State Requirement?
This course provides 3 approved hours toward the 16 credit hours a single-category Virginia agent must complete each biennium, or the 24 hours required when you hold more than one category. This is a 3-hour National Flood Insurance Program course. Where you are required to complete NFIP training in order to write flood business, this is the course that covers it. It is general credit toward your state total, so it does not satisfy the separate 3 credit hours of insurance ethics, which may include Virginia insurance law and regulations. It does not satisfy the whole requirement on its own.
If you hold more than one license category your requirement is 24 hours rather than 16, with a minimum of eight hours in each category you hold. No more than 75 percent of your required credits may come from courses provided by insurance companies or agencies.
β Virginia Continuing Education Requirements
Under Virginia Code Β§ 38.2-1866, an agent licensed in a single license category completes 16 hours of continuing education each biennium. An agent holding licenses in more than one category completes 24 hours, with a minimum of eight credit hours in each category held. Of the total required credits for each biennium, three credit hours must be in insurance ethics, which may include insurance law and regulations applicable in the Commonwealth.
- 16 hours per biennium for a single license category
- 24 hours per biennium if you hold more than one category, with at least 8 hours in each category held
- 3 of the total credits must be in insurance ethics, which may include Virginia insurance law and regulations
- No more than 75 percent of required credits may come from courses provided by insurance companies or agencies
- Single categories include life and annuities, health, property and casualty, personal lines, and title
Virginia exempts agents licensed during the final 13 months of a two-year period from the requirement for that biennium, under Β§ 38.2-1871. Nonresident agents who meet their home state's requirements and consultants who satisfy the requirement for each license category held are also addressed there. Check your own license record rather than assuming an exemption applies.
How this course helps: This 3-hour course contributes 3 of the 16 credit hours a single-category Virginia agent must complete each biennium, or the 24 hours required when you hold more than one category. It is approved in the Property & Casualty category. It does not complete the renewal on its own.
β When Do Licensees Renew?
Virginia agents renew on a two-year biennium. Confirm your own biennium end date on your license record, because it is set from your licensing history rather than from a single statewide date.
β How to Renew Your Virginia License
- Confirm your license categories and your biennium end date on your Virginia license record.
- Work out your total: 16 hours for a single category, or 24 hours with at least 8 in each category if you hold more than one.
- Complete the 3 required ethics credits from an approved ethics course, and the remaining hours in the categories you hold.
- Complete every hour before the last day of your biennium, and allow provider reporting time before that date.
- Check your Virginia CE transcript and confirm each course posted in the correct category.
- Complete the Bureau of Insurance renewal for your license and pay the applicable fee.
- Confirm your license shows active status with an updated expiration date, and keep your completion certificates.
Virginia expects the required credits to be completed within the biennium. Do not rely on a grace period; check your own license record for your biennium end date and finish ahead of it.
β What You Will Learn
- Explain what the NFIP covers and what it excludes, and why a homeowners policy does not cover flood
- Read a Flood Insurance Rate Map and interpret a flood zone determination
- Apply the building and contents coverage limits and the separate deductibles correctly
- Explain the 30-day waiting period and the exceptions to it before a client is caught by it
- Describe how Risk Rating 2.0 changed premium calculation and what an elevation certificate is still used for
- Compare an NFIP policy with private flood coverage and identify when each fits
β Course Content Overview
Hour 1 β NFIP Foundations, Compliance and Core Concepts
The National Flood Insurance Program's purpose and federal authority, community participation and floodplain management ordinances, and how flood zone designations work. Covers the three Standard Flood Insurance Policy forms, the mandatory purchase requirement for federally backed loans, and the disclosure responsibilities a producer carries when flood coverage is offered, declined or placed.
Hour 2 β Risk Rating 2.0, Underwriting and Policy Mechanics
The rating variables behind Risk Rating 2.0 and the underwriting data required to quote accurately. Distinguishes building from contents coverage and replacement cost from actual cash value, then works through endorsements, cancellations, refunds and policy transfers or assumptions at property transfer, along with the lender and condominium scenarios that most often cause confusion.
Hour 3 β Claims, Mitigation, Mapping Changes and Ethical Practice
The claims lifecycle from notice of loss through proof of loss and adjustment, substantial damage and substantial improvement determinations, and how to interpret map revisions and their effect on a policy. Covers mitigation strategies worth recommending, ethical sales practices including clear communication of limits and exclusions, and the checklists that reduce errors-and-omissions exposure.
