βœ… Does This Course Satisfy the State Requirement?

This course provides 5 approved credit hours toward the 24-hour Utah continuing education requirement. It does not by itself satisfy the full renewal requirement, and it does not satisfy the 3-hour ethics requirement. Utah limits self-study to 12 of the 24 required hours, so confirm your classroom and classroom-equivalent balance before relying on self-paced coursework.

βœ… Utah Continuing Education Requirements

Utah resident insurance producers complete 24 credit hours of Utah-approved continuing education during each two-year licensing period, including 3 hours of ethics. Utah is one of the states that limits self-paced study: at least half of the required hours β€” 12 of 24 β€” must be classroom or classroom-equivalent instruction, which means no more than 12 hours may be completed through home-study courses. Under the Department's rule, a course counts as classroom only when it involves two-way interaction with the instrument of instruction and student monitoring; a self-paced course without that interaction is home study. Excess hours do not carry over.

  • 24 credit hours of Utah-approved continuing education per two-year licensing period
  • 3 of those 24 hours must be ethics courses; the remaining 21 may be in any line of insurance
  • At least 12 of the 24 hours must be classroom or classroom-equivalent instruction
  • No more than 12 hours may be home study, which is the category most self-paced online courses fall into
  • No more than 12 hours may come from courses provided by insurers
  • Excess hours cannot be carried over to the next licensing period
  • Title insurance producers have a reduced requirement of 12 hours, including 3 ethics hours

How this course helps: This 5-hour course provides 5 approved credit hours toward the 24 hours Utah requires for each two-year licensing period. It applies as general credit and does not satisfy the separate 3-hour ethics requirement, so at least 19 additional hours β€” including your 3 ethics hours β€” must be completed separately. Because Utah requires at least 12 of the 24 hours to be classroom or classroom-equivalent, this self-paced course counts against the 12-hour self-study allowance β€” plan the rest of your hours accordingly.

βœ… When Do Licensees Renew?

Utah individual producer licenses renew every two years and expire in the licensee's birth month. Continuing education must be complete before the renewal will process β€” and Utah goes a step further than most states: all CE must be posted by the provider before a renewal can be processed, not merely completed. Providers have up to 14 days to post a completion, so finishing coursework in the final two weeks before expiration puts the renewal at risk. Electronic renewal is available until 10:00 p.m. Mountain time on the expiration date. There is no grace period, though a one-year reinstatement window follows expiration.

βœ… How to Renew Your License

Step 1: Confirm your expiration date and license type

Utah individual licenses expire in your birth month every two years. Confirm the exact date and the lines of authority on your license record.

Step 2: Check your classroom versus home-study balance

Pull your Utah CE transcript and count how many of your posted hours are classroom or classroom-equivalent. You need at least 12 in that category, so identify the gap early.

Step 3: Complete the 24 hours, including 3 ethics hours

Finish all required coursework, making sure the ethics requirement is satisfied by courses approved in the ethics category.

Step 4: Finish at least three weeks early so credits can post

Providers have up to 14 days to post completions and Utah will not process a renewal until the credit appears. Build in that buffer deliberately.

Step 5: Verify the transcript before renewing

Review your continuing education transcript for the applicable review period and confirm every course posted with the right hours and category.

Step 6: Renew online and pay the fee

Complete the renewal through the licensing system the Department directs licensees to, before 10:00 p.m. Mountain time on the expiration date, and pay the renewal fee.

Step 7: Keep your proof on file

Utah requires producers to retain proof of completion and may audit CE hours by mail. Save your certificates and confirm your license shows active with a new expiration date.
