  • Licensed life, accident and health agents and producers
  • Agents who intend to sell, solicit or negotiate long-term care insurance
  • Producers entering the Partnership market for the first time
  • Agents who advise clients on Medicaid planning implications
  • Producers who need the initial training before writing Partnership policies
  • Agents who need long-term care credit toward Tennessee's renewal total

βœ… Does This Course Satisfy the State Requirement?

This course provides 8 approved hours toward the 24 a Tennessee producer must complete every two years. It does not satisfy the requirement on its own, and it does not satisfy the separate 3 hours with a course concentration in ethics.

Tennessee treats an approved self-study course as worth the same number of hours as classroom instruction and sets no cap on self-study, so all 8 hours count in full. If you hold property and casualty authority, the one-time 3-hour flood course is a separate requirement.

βœ… Tennessee Continuing Education Requirements

Tennessee requires 24 credit hours of approved continuing education every two years following the last day of the producer's birth month, under Rule 0780-01-56-.08 and Tenn. Code Ann. Β§ 56-6-107(c). Three of those hours must have a course concentration in ethics. The 24-hour total does not change with the number of lines you hold - a producer with both Life & Health and Property & Casualty authority still completes 24, not 48. Holding more lines changes which mandated subjects apply, not the total.

  • 24 credit hours in every two-year continuing education period
  • 3 of the 24 must be in a TDCI-approved course with a concentration in ethics
  • One-time 3-hour flood insurance course for resident property and casualty producers, which counts toward the 24 for one period
  • 24 hours is the total no matter how many lines of authority you hold
  • No cap on self-study or online hours - all 24 may be completed online
  • Up to 12 excess hours carry over to the next period, but ethics hours never carry over

Tennessee treats an approved self-study course as worth the same number of hours as classroom instruction, and sets no cap on self-study or online hours, so the full 24 may be completed online. A producer may carry a maximum of 12 excess hours into the next period, but carryover never applies to the ethics hours - those must be earned fresh every period. The same course cannot be repeated for credit within two years. Resident property and casualty producers have a one-time 3-hour flood insurance requirement that counts toward the 24 for one period. A producer continuously licensed in Tennessee since January 1, 1994 is exempt from continuing education altogether. Nonresident producers satisfy Tennessee by meeting their home state's requirement where that state reciprocates.

How this course helps: This 8-hour course contributes 8 of the 24 credit hours a Tennessee producer must complete every two years. It is general credit, so it does not satisfy the separate 3 hours of ethics, and it is not the one-time 3-hour flood course that property and casualty producers need. Those hours must be completed separately.

βœ… When Do Licensees Renew?

Tennessee producer licences run 24 months from the last day of your birth month, and you renew on or before the end of your birth month every other year. The continuing education deadline and the licence expiration date are the same day. Tennessee emails a renewal notice to your business email about 90 days out.

βœ… How to Renew Your Tennessee License

  1. Confirm your expiration date and lines of authority. Your licence runs 24 months from the last day of your birth month.
  2. Work out which mandated subjects apply. Everyone needs 3 ethics hours. Property and casualty producers also need the one-time 3-hour flood course if they have not already taken it.
  3. Complete all 24 hours before the end of your birth month in your renewal year.
  4. Finish early. Providers have up to 30 days to report electronically, and the state system takes roughly another 72 hours to sync, so a course finished in the last week of your birth month can block your renewal even though you completed it on time.
  5. Check your education transcript in State Based Systems and confirm the ethics hours posted with the ethics concentration.
  6. Renew online at NIPR.com. The renewal window opens 90 days before expiration, and NIPR will not accept the application until your CE shows as compliant.
  7. Pay the $60 biennial renewal fee, then confirm your licence shows active with an updated expiration date. Keep your original completion certificates for two years, as the rule requires.

There is no grace period. The licence expires at the end of your birth month. A renewal fee received after the due date carries a penalty of double the unpaid fee. You may reinstate the same licence within 12 months of the due date without retaking the written examination, but after 12 months you must apply as a new applicant and satisfy every initial licensing requirement again, including the exam.

βœ… What You Will Learn

  • Describe the settings of care long-term care insurance pays for and how they differ in cost
  • Apply activities-of-daily-living and cognitive impairment benefit triggers correctly
  • Explain how the Partnership asset disregard interacts with Medicaid eligibility and estate recovery
  • Compare policy designs, benefit periods, elimination periods and inflation protection options
  • Apply the tax treatment of qualified long-term care contracts
  • Recognize suitability limits and the signs of elder abuse or financial exploitation

βœ… Course Content Overview

Hour 1: What long-term care actually is: the settings of care from home care through assisted living to skilled nursing, who needs care and for how long, current cost of care, and why health insurance and Medicare do not fill this gap.

Hour 2: Medicare, Medicaid and personal resources compared: what Medicare's skilled nursing benefit really covers, Medicaid eligibility rules including income and asset limits, the look-back period, and spousal impoverishment protections.

Hour 3: The Partnership program: how a qualified Partnership policy earns dollar-for-dollar asset disregard, reciprocity between participating states, estate recovery and how the disregard survives it, and the disclosure a Partnership policy must carry.

Hour 4: Benefit triggers and eligibility for benefits: the activities of daily living, cognitive impairment standards, licensed health care practitioner certification, the plan of care, and how a claim is actually opened and substantiated.

Hour 5: Policy design: daily and monthly benefit amounts, benefit periods and pools of money, elimination periods, home care and facility benefits, care coordination, and shared and joint policy structures.

Hour 6: Inflation protection: compound, simple and guaranteed purchase options, why inflation protection is required for Partnership qualification, and what the choice actually costs a client over a twenty-year horizon.

Hour 7: Tax treatment and funding alternatives: qualified long-term care contracts, deductibility limits, benefit taxation, hybrid life and annuity designs with long-term care riders, and the tradeoffs each alternative carries.

Hour 8: Suitability, ethics and consumer protection: assessing whether coverage fits a client's assets and income, the required suitability worksheet, replacement standards, rate increase history and disclosure, and recognizing and reporting elder abuse and financial exploitation.
