✅ Who Should Take This Course?

  • Licensed resident and nonresident insurance producers
  • Life, accident and health agents
  • Property and casualty agents and personal lines producers
  • Producers who need to satisfy a mandated ethics requirement at renewal
  • Agency owners and managers responsible for producer conduct
  • Newly licensed agents building good habits before their first renewal

✅ Does This Course Satisfy the State Requirement?

This course provides 3 approved hours toward the 24 credit hours a Tennessee producer must complete every two years. Because this is an approved ethics course, these 3 hours are the hours that satisfy Tennessee's requirement for 3 hours with a course concentration in ethics. It does not satisfy the whole requirement on its own - you still need the remaining general hours.

Tennessee treats an approved self-study course as worth the same number of hours as classroom instruction and sets no cap on self-study, so all of these hours count in full. Up to 12 excess hours carry into the next period, but ethics hours never carry over. If you hold property and casualty authority, the one-time 3-hour flood course is a separate mandated subject.

✅ Tennessee Continuing Education Requirements

Tennessee requires 24 credit hours of approved continuing education every two years following the last day of the producer's birth month, under Rule 0780-01-56-.08 and Tenn. Code Ann. § 56-6-107(c). Three of those hours must have a course concentration in ethics. The 24-hour total does not change with the number of lines you hold - a producer with both Life & Health and Property & Casualty authority still completes 24, not 48. Holding more lines changes which mandated subjects apply, not the total.

  • 24 credit hours in every two-year continuing education period
  • 3 of the 24 must be in a TDCI-approved course with a concentration in ethics
  • One-time 3-hour flood insurance course for resident property and casualty producers, which counts toward the 24 for one period
  • 24 hours is the total no matter how many lines of authority you hold
  • No cap on self-study or online hours - all 24 may be completed online
  • Up to 12 excess hours carry over to the next period, but ethics hours never carry over

Tennessee treats an approved self-study course as worth the same number of hours as classroom instruction, and sets no cap on self-study or online hours, so the full 24 may be completed online. A producer may carry a maximum of 12 excess hours into the next period, but carryover never applies to the ethics hours - those must be earned fresh every period. The same course cannot be repeated for credit within two years. Resident property and casualty producers have a one-time 3-hour flood insurance requirement that counts toward the 24 for one period. A producer continuously licensed in Tennessee since January 1, 1994 is exempt from continuing education altogether. Nonresident producers satisfy Tennessee by meeting their home state's requirement where that state reciprocates.

How this course helps: This 3-hour course contributes 3 of the 24 credit hours a Tennessee producer must complete every two years. It is approved in the Ethics category. Because this is an approved ethics course, these 3 hours are the hours that satisfy Tennessee's requirement for 3 hours with a course concentration in ethics. It does not complete the rest of your renewal on its own.

✅ When Do Licensees Renew?

Tennessee producer licences run 24 months from the last day of your birth month, and you renew on or before the end of your birth month every other year. The continuing education deadline and the licence expiration date are the same day. Tennessee emails a renewal notice to your business email about 90 days out.

✅ How to Renew Your Tennessee License

  1. Confirm your expiration date and lines of authority. Your licence runs 24 months from the last day of your birth month.
  2. Work out which mandated subjects apply. Everyone needs 3 ethics hours. Property and casualty producers also need the one-time 3-hour flood course if they have not already taken it.
  3. Complete all 24 hours before the end of your birth month in your renewal year.
  4. Finish early. Providers have up to 30 days to report electronically, and the state system takes roughly another 72 hours to sync, so a course finished in the last week of your birth month can block your renewal even though you completed it on time.
  5. Check your education transcript in State Based Systems and confirm the ethics hours posted with the ethics concentration.
  6. Renew online at NIPR.com. The renewal window opens 90 days before expiration, and NIPR will not accept the application until your CE shows as compliant.
  7. Pay the $60 biennial renewal fee, then confirm your licence shows active with an updated expiration date. Keep your original completion certificates for two years, as the rule requires.

There is no grace period. The licence expires at the end of your birth month. A renewal fee received after the due date carries a penalty of double the unpaid fee. You may reinstate the same licence within 12 months of the due date without retaking the written examination, but after 12 months you must apply as a new applicant and satisfy every initial licensing requirement again, including the exam.

✅ What You Will Learn

  • Identify the duties a producer owes the client, the insurer and the public and explain where they conflict
  • Apply suitability and needs-based selling standards to a real recommendation
  • Handle premium funds and client money in line with fiduciary obligations
  • Recognize misrepresentation, twisting, churning and other unfair trade practices before they happen
  • Apply disclosure, advertising and replacement standards correctly
  • Protect client privacy and nonpublic personal information in daily practice

✅ Course Content Overview

Hour 1: What ethics means in an insurance context: the difference between what is legal and what is right, the duties a producer owes to the client, to the insurer and to the public, and how those duties conflict in ordinary situations. The hour covers agency and authority, fiduciary responsibility, the handling of premium funds and client money, and the standard of care a licensee is held to. It closes with a framework for working through an ethical decision rather than reacting to one.

Hour 2: Ethics in the sales process: suitability and needs-based selling, the information a producer must gather before making a recommendation, disclosure obligations and advertising standards, replacement rules and why replacement draws regulatory attention, and compensation transparency and conflicts of interest. The hour works through misrepresentation, twisting, churning and rebating with examples of how each one starts small.

Hour 3: Privacy, recordkeeping and accountability: protecting nonpublic personal information, the practical security a small agency owes its clients, complaint handling and the duty to cooperate with the department, and the disciplinary consequences of unfair trade practices. The hour ends with the ethical obligations that continue after the sale, when the client needs service or files a claim.
