β Who Should Take This Course?
- West Virginia licensed resident insurance producers renewing a license with long-term care authority
- Producers who need 8 approved hours toward the 24-hour West Virginia requirement
- Agents who want current, practical initial ltc partnership training knowledge, not filler credit
- New producers building a working foundation in this coverage area
- Experienced agents refreshing before a renewal deadline
- Agency staff who support producers and want the same technical grounding
β Does This Course Satisfy the State Requirement?
This course is designed to satisfy the one-time initial long-term care insurance training required before selling long-term care products, and it provides 8 approved credit hours toward the 24-hour West Virginia renewal total. It does not satisfy the full renewal requirement or the 3-hour ethics requirement.
β West Virginia Continuing Education Requirements
West Virginia resident insurance producers complete 24 credit hours of approved continuing education during each two-year compliance period, and at least 3 of those hours must be ethics credit. The compliance period is coextensive with the license period, so a producer's CE deadline is the same as the license expiration date. West Virginia does not cap self-study or online hours, which means an approved online course can be used for any part of the 24-hour total.
- 24 credit hours of approved continuing education per biennial compliance period
- 3 of those 24 hours must be in ethics β ethics hours cannot be met with general credit
- The remaining 21 hours may be general or elective insurance credit
- No self-study cap. West Virginia does not limit how many of the 24 hours may be completed by approved self-study or online instruction
- Producers who sell long-term care insurance must complete a one-time 8-hour LTC training and at least 4 hours of ongoing LTC training each biennium thereafter
- Producers who sell annuities must complete a one-time 4-hour annuity training
- Up to 6 excess credit hours may be carried into the next biennium; ethics and long-term care hours do not carry over as ethics or LTC credit
How this course helps: This 8-hour course is the one-time initial long-term care training a producer completes before selling, soliciting or negotiating long-term care insurance, and it covers the Qualified State Long-Term Care Partnership content that training must include. It also provides 8 approved credit hours toward your 24-hour West Virginia renewal total. It does not satisfy the separate 3-hour ethics requirement, and ongoing long-term care training is still required in each later cycle.
β When Do Licensees Renew?
West Virginia resident producer licenses are issued on a biennial cycle and expire on the last day of the licensee's birth month. Continuing education must be complete by that expiration date. Because approved providers are allowed up to 30 days to file completion rosters with the state, the Insurance Commissioner advises producers not to wait until the final weeks β a course finished fewer than 30 days before expiration may not post in time for the renewal to process. There is no grace period to keep transacting business after expiration, although a separate late-renewal path exists for up to twelve months after the expiration date.
β How to Renew Your License
Step 1: Confirm your license type and expiration date
Check your West Virginia license record for your exact expiration date β the last day of your birth month β and confirm which lines of authority you hold.
Step 2: Review your current CE transcript
Look at your continuing education transcript to see how many general and ethics hours are already posted for the current biennium, and what is still outstanding.
Step 3: Complete the full 24 hours, including 3 ethics hours
Finish all required coursework before your expiration date. Ethics credit must come from courses approved in the ethics category.
Step 4: Allow time for provider reporting
Approved providers have up to 30 days to report completions. Finish your coursework at least 30 days before expiration so the credit posts before you renew.
Step 5: Verify the credits posted
Re-check your CE transcript and confirm that every course appears with the correct hour count and category before you start the renewal.
Step 6: Submit your renewal and pay the fee
File your producer renewal electronically through the state's designated licensing system, or by the paper renewal application the Commissioner accepts, and pay the renewal fee.
Step 7: Save your records and confirm active status
Keep your completion certificates β West Virginia requires licensees to retain them for at least four years β and verify your license shows an active status with an updated expiration date.

Hour 5 β Underwriting, Pricing, Rate Stability and Claims
Medical underwriting basics and the premium factors that drive cost. Covers rate stability concepts and why increases occur, the options available to a policyholder facing a premium increase, and the claims process from notice of claim through care coordination, case management and the role of licensed practitioners.
Hour 6 β Tax Treatment, HIPAA-Qualified LTC and Coordination of Benefits
HIPAA tax-qualified LTC contracts and the requirements for benefit eligibility. Covers federal and common state tax treatment of premiums and benefits, interactions with Medicare, coordination with private health insurance, the coordination issues that arise with hybrids and multiple policies, and documentation practices for these discussions.
Hour 7 β Planning Integration, Affordability Strategies and Caregiver Dynamics
Integrating long-term care with retirement and estate planning, including realistic funding sources. Covers affordability levers such as adjusting benefit period, daily benefit and elimination period; household and caregiver considerations including respite benefits; plain-language trade-off discussions; responses to post-issue health changes; and building an annual review cadence.
Hour 8 β State Nuances, Advertising and Market Conduct, and Capstone Case Studies
State-specific Partnership nuances including reciprocity, and what counts as advertising under market conduct rules.
