β Does This Course Satisfy the State Requirement?
This course provides 3 approved credit hours toward the 24-hour West Virginia continuing education requirement. It does not by itself satisfy the full renewal requirement, and it does not satisfy the 3-hour ethics requirement.
β West Virginia Continuing Education Requirements
West Virginia resident insurance producers complete 24 credit hours of approved continuing education during each two-year compliance period, and at least 3 of those hours must be ethics credit. The compliance period is coextensive with the license period, so a producer's CE deadline is the same as the license expiration date. West Virginia does not cap self-study or online hours, which means an approved online course can be used for any part of the 24-hour total.
- 24 credit hours of approved continuing education per biennial compliance period
- 3 of those 24 hours must be in ethics β ethics hours cannot be met with general credit
- The remaining 21 hours may be general or elective insurance credit
- No self-study cap. West Virginia does not limit how many of the 24 hours may be completed by approved self-study or online instruction
- Producers who sell long-term care insurance must complete a one-time 8-hour LTC training and at least 4 hours of ongoing LTC training each biennium thereafter
- Producers who sell annuities must complete a one-time 4-hour annuity training
- Up to 6 excess credit hours may be carried into the next biennium; ethics and long-term care hours do not carry over as ethics or LTC credit
How this course helps: This 3-hour course provides 3 approved credit hours toward the 24 hours West Virginia requires for each two-year (biennial) compliance period. It applies as general credit and does not satisfy the separate 3-hour ethics requirement, so at least 21 additional hours β including your 3 ethics hours β must be completed separately.
β When Do Licensees Renew?
West Virginia resident producer licenses are issued on a biennial cycle and expire on the last day of the licensee's birth month. Continuing education must be complete by that expiration date. Because approved providers are allowed up to 30 days to file completion rosters with the state, the Insurance Commissioner advises producers not to wait until the final weeks β a course finished fewer than 30 days before expiration may not post in time for the renewal to process. There is no grace period to keep transacting business after expiration, although a separate late-renewal path exists for up to twelve months after the expiration date.
β How to Renew Your License
Step 1: Confirm your license type and expiration date
Check your West Virginia license record for your exact expiration date β the last day of your birth month β and confirm which lines of authority you hold.
Step 2: Review your current CE transcript
Look at your continuing education transcript to see how many general and ethics hours are already posted for the current biennium, and what is still outstanding.
Step 3: Complete the full 24 hours, including 3 ethics hours
Finish all required coursework before your expiration date. Ethics credit must come from courses approved in the ethics category.
Step 4: Allow time for provider reporting
Approved providers have up to 30 days to report completions. Finish your coursework at least 30 days before expiration so the credit posts before you renew.
Step 5: Verify the credits posted
Re-check your CE transcript and confirm that every course appears with the correct hour count and category before you start the renewal.
Step 6: Submit your renewal and pay the fee
File your producer renewal electronically through the state's designated licensing system, or by the paper renewal application the Commissioner accepts, and pay the renewal fee.
Step 7: Save your records and confirm active status
Keep your completion certificates β West Virginia requires licensees to retain them for at least four years β and verify your license shows an active status with an updated expiration date.
β What You Will Learn
- How cyber liability, data breach and technology E&O exposures are underwritten and priced
- Where standard property and liability forms leave gaps that specialty markets are built to fill
- How climate-driven catastrophe exposure is changing capacity, deductibles and policy language
- When to place a risk in the surplus lines market and what that changes for the insured
- How gig-economy, short-term rental and drone exposures fall outside personal lines forms
- Practical account-review questions that surface uncovered emerging exposures
β Course Content Overview
Hour 1 β The Emerging Risk Landscape
Defines what makes a risk 'emerging,' walks through cyber and data-breach exposure, technology errors and omissions, and how carriers have responded with sublimits, coinsurance and ransomware exclusions. Covers reputational and business-interruption follow-on losses.
Hour 2 β Catastrophe, Climate and Property Capacity
Examines wildfire, severe convective storm, flood and named-storm exposure; percentage deductibles; valuation disputes; and how reinsurance cost flows through to the insured. Reviews parametric and layered structures.
Hour 3 β Specialty Markets and Coverage Gaps
Surplus lines placement and what the insured gives up, plus gig-economy, short-term rental, drone/UAS and cannabis-adjacent exposures. Ends with a coverage-gap checklist agents can run on a renewal.
