This course is not approved by the Virginia Board or any other regulatory body, and it does not need to be. Virginia has no pre-approval process for professional engineer continuing education providers or courses. Instead, 18VAC10-20-683 sets the criteria an activity must meet, and you confirm your hours when you renew.

  • Engineers reinstating a Virginia PE license who need hours completed in the two years before applying
  • Professional engineers licensed in several states who also hold a Virginia license

βœ… Does This Course Satisfy the Virginia Requirement?

This 3-hour course is designed to meet the criteria Virginia uses for continuing education activities, including a concluding assessment for self-study. It provides 3 of the 16 hours generally required for each Virginia professional engineer renewal.

It does not satisfy the full 16-hour requirement by itself. You will need 13 more hours from other activities, such as the other courses in our 16-hour Virginia PE package.

This course is not approved by the Virginia Board or any other regulatory body, and it does not need to be. Virginia has no pre-approval process for professional engineer continuing education providers or courses. Instead, 18VAC10-20-683 sets the criteria an activity must meet, and you confirm your hours when you renew.

βœ… Virginia PE Continuing Education Requirements

Virginia professional engineers must complete 16 hours of continuing education during the two-year license period immediately before their license expires. The same rule applies to architects, land surveyors, and landscape architects licensed by the APELSCIDLA Board.

  • Total hours: 16 hours every two years
  • Required topics: None. Content must relate to your practice and may include project management, risk management, ethics, and public health, safety, and welfare
  • Hour definition: 50 contact minutes equal one hour
  • Online self-study: Accepted when the sponsor provides a concluding assessment and completion documentation. Virginia sets no cap on online hours
  • Carryover: None. Extra hours do not count toward the next renewal
  • Reporting: No provider reporting. You attest at renewal and keep records for three years after your license expires
  • Audits: If selected, you must send documentation within 21 calendar days
  • Reinstatement: 16 hours completed in the two years before the Board receives your reinstatement application
  • Waivers: The Board may grant exemptions or reduce hours for certified illness or undue hardship

How this course helps: This 3-hour course provides 3 of the 16 hours Virginia PEs need each renewal. It applies toward the general total, because Virginia sets no subject categories. You still need 13 more hours to complete your renewal.

βœ… When Do Virginia Professional Engineers Renew?

Virginia PE licenses are valid for two years from the last day of the month in which they were issued, and each renewal runs two years from the previous expiration date. DPOR mails a renewal notice before your license expires, but not receiving a notice does not excuse a late renewal.

You cannot practice with an expired license. If DPOR receives your renewal fee more than 30 days after expiration, a $50 late fee applies. After six months, you must reinstate instead of renewing, and the reinstatement fee is the renewal fee plus $200 for a license expired less than five years.

Your 16 hours must be completed before you renew, within the two-year license period that is ending.

βœ… How to Renew Your Virginia PE License

  1. Check your expiration date. Look up your license in DPOR's License Lookup or check your renewal notice.
  2. Complete 16 hours. Finish them within your current two-year license period, without repeating the same course content.
  3. Save your certificates. Download or keep the emailed certificate for each course.
  4. Renew online or by mail. Use DPOR's Online Services portal, or return the renewal card or credit card payment form by mail or fax. DPOR does not process renewals by phone.
  5. Attest to your continuing education. Renewing certifies that you completed the requirement. If you renew with DPOR's paper renewal form, follow its instructions for attaching CE evidence.
  6. Pay the renewal fee. Pay the fee shown on your renewal notice or form.
  7. Confirm your renewal. Check License Lookup for the new expiration date, and keep your certificates for three years after your license expires in case of an audit.
