✅ Who Should Take This Course?

  • Texas licensed insurance agents who sell, solicit or negotiate annuity contracts
  • Texas general lines life, accident, health and HMO licensees adding annuity credit
  • Producers who represent an insurer in the sale of annuity products in Texas
  • Non-resident Texas licensees whose home state does not cover their Texas annuity requirement
  • Agents who want annuity hours that also count on the classroom side of the Texas 12-hour minimum
  • Anyone building toward the 24-hour Texas renewal who still needs annuity credit

✅ Does This Course Satisfy the State Requirement?

This course provides 4 credit hours toward two separate Texas requirements at once, and it does not satisfy either of them by itself.

Texas requires licensees who sell, solicit or negotiate annuities to complete at least 8 hours of certified annuity continuing education during each two-year licensing period. This course is approved in that certified annuity category and supplies 4 of those 8 hours. The other 4 must come from another certified annuity course.

Texas also requires 24 total hours per licensing period, including 3 hours of ethics or consumer protection. This course contributes 4 of the 24. It does not include the ethics hours.

✅ Texas Continuing Education Requirements

Texas resident and non-resident licensees complete 24 hours of continuing education during each two-year licensing period. Within that total:

  • 3 hours must be in ethics or consumer protection
  • At least 12 hours must be classroom or classroom-equivalent instruction
  • No more than 12 hours may be self-study
  • 8 hours of certified annuity continuing education are required in addition to the general total for any licensee who sells, solicits or negotiates annuities, and those hours count inside the 24

The annuity requirement recurs every licensing period. It is not a one-time course. A licensee who completes the separate annuity certification course may count that course as 4 of the 8 annuity hours, but only in the period in which it is taken.

How this course helps: This 4-hour course is approved by the Texas Department of Insurance in the certified annuity category. It supplies 4 of the 8 annuity hours required of annuity sellers and 4 of the 24 total hours, and because it is registered as Classroom Equivalent it also counts toward the 12-hour classroom minimum. It does not provide the 3 ethics hours, and 4 further annuity hours remain after this course.

✅ When Do Texas Licensees Renew?

Texas insurance licenses renew on a two-year cycle tied to your own license expiration date rather than a single statewide date. Your continuing education must be completed and posted to your record before the renewal is processed, so finishing in the last few days of the cycle is risky.

Check your exact expiration date on your license record rather than relying on a reminder notice.

✅ How to Renew Your Texas License

  1. Confirm your license type and expiration date on your official license record, along with how many hours you still owe.
  2. Complete all 24 hours, including the 3 ethics or consumer protection hours, the 12-hour classroom minimum, and the 8 annuity hours if you sell annuities.
  3. Allow time for the hours to post. Completions must appear on your record before the renewal can be processed.
  4. Submit your renewal online through the state’s electronic renewal service and pay the required fee.
  5. Verify the result. Confirm your license shows an active status with an updated expiration date, and keep your certificates.

✅ What You Will Learn

  • How annuities are classified, who the parties to the contract are, and how contract mechanics work
  • What product features actually do during accumulation, and what optional riders cost
  • How non-qualified and qualified annuities are taxed, including early-distribution penalties
  • What the annuity disclosure document must contain and when it must be delivered
  • Which Buyer's Guide applies and how the free-look period works
  • What counts as a replacement, and the comparison and records a replacement requires
  • Which sales practices are prohibited, and how to build a file that holds up

✅ Course Content Overview

The course runs four instructional hours:

Hour 1 — Annuity Classifications, Parties, and Contract Mechanics
Annuity classifications and the parties to the contract, product features during accumulation, payout options at annuitization, access to contract value, and what optional riders actually cost.

Hour 2 — Income Taxation and the Primary Uses of Annuities
Taxation of non-qualified and qualified annuities, early-distribution penalties, how to disclose tax status and withdrawal penalties adequately, and describing the primary uses of annuities in plain language.

Hour 3 — Required Consumer Disclosures, the Buyer's Guide, and the Free-Look Period
When disclosure obligations apply and when delivery must happen, the required content of the annuity disclosure document, which Buyer's Guide applies, and the producer's role during and after the free-look period.

Hour 4 — Replacement and Exchange Processing, Prohibited Practices, and Insurance Fraud
What counts as a replacement and the duties that follow, the replacement comparison and the records that must be preserved, prohibited practices in annuity sales, and building a defensible file.
