β Does This Course Satisfy the State Requirement?
This course provides 5 approved credit hours toward New Mexico's 24-hour continuing education requirement, approved in the Life group and reported as GEN-5 credits. It does not by itself satisfy the full requirement, it does not satisfy the 3-hour ethics requirement, and β because it is a self-study course β it cannot supply the 3 hours New Mexico requires you to earn with live-instructor interaction. The New Mexico Office of Superintendent of Insurance approved it under provider #500033375, course #6000225927, effective September 2, 2026, with an expiration date of September 2, 2028.
β New Mexico Continuing Education Requirements
New Mexico runs a two-year compliance period and the arithmetic is simple, but it has a catch that most self-study catalogues do not mention. The Office of Superintendent of Insurance requires a resident producer to complete 24 credit hours each renewal cycle β 21 general hours and 3 hours of ethics. Separately, 13.4.7.10(D)(2) NMAC requires that at least 3 of those hours be earned in a formal classroom, or in another learning format that lets you interact with a live instructor.
Those two rules are written in different sections and are not expressly linked, which means a single live-instructor ethics course can satisfy both at once. What they rule out together is a renewal built entirely from self-study. Every 1st Choice CE New Mexico course, including this one, is approved as self-study, so our catalogue can supply at most 21 of your 24 hours.
- 24 credit hours per two-year compliance period for resident producers and adjusters, excluding limited lines
- 3 hours must be ethics β 13.4.7.9(A)(1) NMAC
- 3 hours must involve a live instructor β formal classroom or an interactive format, 13.4.7.10(D)(2) NMAC
- Online and self-study formats are permitted for the remaining hours β 13.4.7.10(D)
- No carryover. Hours earned in one compliance period cannot be applied to the next β 13.4.7.9(B) NMAC
Some licensees are exempt altogether. 13.4.7.2(B) NMAC exempts limited license holders, licensees continuously licensed for 25 years or more without a lapse of more than 90 days, licensees who keep a license solely for renewal fee residuals without transacting insurance, fraternal benefit society agents, and nonresident licensees who already comply with their home state. If you think an exemption applies to you, confirm it with OSI before you buy hours.
New Mexico keeps your record for you. Your reported courses are visible by logging in to SBS, and OSI strongly encourages finishing your hours at least 90 days before your license expires. Completing CE late carries a $50.00 penalty before OSI will process the renewal.
How this course helps: This 5-hour course contributes 5 of the 24 hours a New Mexico resident producer must complete each two-year compliance period. It carries GEN-5 credits. It does not count toward the 3 required ethics hours, and it does not count toward the 3 hours that must be earned in a formal classroom or another format that lets you interact with a live instructor. After this course you still need 19 hours, and those remaining hours must include the 3 ethics hours and the 3 live-instructor hours β a single live ethics course can satisfy both.
β When Do New Mexico Producers Renew?
New Mexico producer licenses run on a two-year term and your compliance period is defined in 13.4.7.7(F) NMAC as the time between your issue date or last renewal date and your expiration date. The deadline therefore moves with your own license record rather than sitting on a fixed statewide date β check your expiration date, not a calendar rule of thumb.
OSI describes the renewal period as beginning the day after your expiration date and running to the next expiration date, which gives you roughly 24 months. It strongly encourages completing your hours a minimum of 90 days before expiration, and there is a practical reason for that: providers have up to 10 days to report completions, and you must wait 24 hours after hours are banked before you can submit the renewal application.
Because there is no carryover, hours finished after your expiration date do nothing for the cycle that just closed. Leaving 24 hours to the final fortnight is the single most common way a New Mexico producer ends up paying the $50 late-CE penalty.
β How to Renew Your New Mexico Insurance License
Step 1: Check your expiration date and what you still owe
Log in to SBS and look at your license record and your reported continuing education. That tells you your actual deadline and exactly which hours have already been credited.
Step 2: Confirm the shape of your requirement
Most resident producers owe 24 hours: 21 general and 3 ethics. At least 3 of the 24 must be earned with live-instructor interaction. Check whether an exemption under 13.4.7.2(B) NMAC applies to you before buying anything.
Step 3: Complete your self-study hours
Work through the approved online courses that make up the bulk of your requirement. 1st Choice CE covers up to 21 of your 24 hours this way.
Step 4: Complete the ethics and live-instructor hours
Take a 3-hour ethics course delivered in a formal classroom or another format that lets you interact with a live instructor. One course that is both ethics and live satisfies both minimums at once.
Step 5: Allow time for reporting
Providers have up to 10 days to report your completed hours to OSI, and you must wait 24 hours after the hours are banked before submitting your renewal. Finish early β OSI recommends at least 90 days out.
Step 6: Verify your hours on SBS
Log in to SBS and confirm every course has posted and the totals are right, including the ethics hours. The transcript is what OSI reads.
Step 7: Submit the renewal through NIPR and pay the fee
Submit your renewal application through NIPR, update your contact and business information, and pay the fee the application shows. Keep the receipt and confirm the license shows as active with a new expiration date.
