β Does This Course Satisfy the Minnesota Requirement?
This course provides 3 contact hours toward your Minnesota renewal: 3 of the 24 contact hours registered nurses need, or 3 of the 12 contact hours licensed practical nurses need, in each 24-month participation period. It does not satisfy the full requirement by itself. Minnesota does not require specific subjects, so these hours count toward your total when you complete them during your current participation period.
This course is included in both the 24 Hour Minnesota RN Complete Renewal Package for $34.99 and the 12 Hour Minnesota LPN Complete Renewal Package for $24.99.
β Minnesota RN and LPN Continuing Education Requirements
The Minnesota Board of Nursing requires continuing education in every 24-month participation period to renew your registration: 24 contact hours for registered nurses (one hour for each month) and 12 contact hours for licensed practical nurses (one hour for every two months). The Board does not pre-approve providers or courses. Instead, each activity you report must meet the Board's criteria for acceptable continuing education.
- Registered nurses (RN): 24 contact hours every 24-month participation period
- Licensed practical nurses (LPN): 12 contact hours every 24-month participation period
- Shorter or longer periods: The same ratio applies, one hour per month for RNs and one hour per two months for LPNs
- Required subjects: None; content must be designed to enhance your ability to practice nursing
- Contact hour: 60 minutes of instruction
- What makes an activity acceptable: Written objectives, a qualified instructor other than you, completion during your participation period, and a certificate showing the title, date, and contact hours (objectives are not necessary when a health licensing board, such as the California BRN, has approved the CE)
- Audits and records: The Board randomly audits licensees; keep your certificates for two years after you report the hours at renewal
How this course helps: This 3-hour course contributes 3 contact hours toward your Minnesota total. Registered nurses will still need 21 more contact hours and licensed practical nurses 9 more during the same participation period. Because Minnesota has no required subjects, these hours apply to your general total.
β When Do Minnesota Nurses Renew?
Minnesota nursing registration renews every 24 months. After your first registration, each period ends on the last day of your birth month, in an even- or odd-numbered year that matches the year you were born. Your expiration date appears on your license record in the Board's online services.
The Board mails a reminder postcard about three months before your registration expires and also sends an email reminder if it has your current email address. The application deadline and the expiration date are the same day, so renew by midnight on your expiration date. If you miss it, you must apply for reregistration instead of renewal, and practicing without a current registration carries an additional fee.
The continuing education you report must be completed during the participation period that is ending, so plan to finish your hours before you renew.
β How to Renew Your Minnesota Nursing Registration
- Check your record. Sign in to the Minnesota Board of Nursing online services to confirm your expiration date and participation period.
- Complete your hours. Finish 24 contact hours (RN) or 12 contact hours (LPN) of acceptable continuing education during your participation period.
- Save your certificates. Keep each certificate for two years after you report the hours, in case you are selected for an audit.
- Start your renewal. Renew online through the Board's online services before midnight on your expiration date. You can request a paper application from the Board at 612-317-3000.
- Confirm your continuing education. The renewal application asks you to verify that your activities meet the Board's criteria. Do not send certificates unless the Board asks for them in an audit.
- Pay the fee. The registration renewal fee for RNs and LPNs is $85.
- Confirm your renewal. Verify that your registration shows the new expiration date, and keep your certificates.
