β Does This Course Satisfy the Michigan Requirement?
This course provides 4 contact hours toward the 25 hours Michigan RNs and LPNs need in each two-year renewal period. It does not satisfy the full requirement by itself, and it is not the pain and symptom management or implicit bias training Michigan requires.
This course is included in the 25 Hour Michigan RN and LPN Complete Renewal Package, which provides all 25 hours for $39.99.
β Michigan RN and LPN Continuing Education Requirements
Michigan registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical nurses (LPNs) must complete at least 25 hours of board-approved continuing education during the two years before their license expires. The Michigan Board of Nursing accepts continuing education approved by another state board of nursing, such as the California Board of Registered Nursing (R 338.10602).
- RNs and LPNs: At least 25 hours of continuing education in each two-year renewal period (R 338.10601)
- Pain and symptom management: At least 2 of the 25 hours (R 338.10601(2))
- Implicit bias training: 1 hour for each year of the license cycle, which is 2 hours for a two-year license; these hours may count toward the 25 (R 338.7004)
- Human trafficking: A one-time training under R 338.10105; it does not earn credit toward the 25 hours
- Credit hour: 1 credit hour for each 60 minutes of participation when an activity was not approved for a set number of hours (R 338.10602)
- Limits: No more than 12 credit hours in a 24-hour period, and no credit for repeating the same activity in a renewal period
- Records: Keep proof of your continuing education for 4 years after you apply for renewal (6 years for implicit bias training)
- Proposed changes: Proposed rules would move nursing to a three-year license cycle; they are not yet in effect
How this course helps: This 4-hour course contributes 4 contact hours toward your Michigan total of 25 hours. You will still need 21 more hours during the same renewal period, including the required pain and symptom management and implicit bias training if this course does not cover them.
β When Do Michigan Nurses Renew?
Michigan nursing licenses renew every two years. Expiration dates vary, so check the expiration date printed on your license or shown in MiPLUS.
If you miss your expiration date, Michigan allows renewal within 60 days after it with a late renewal fee. After 60 days the license is void, and you must apply for relicensure before you practice again.
Complete your continuing education during the two years before your license expires, and keep your records in case you are selected for the Board's random audit.
β How to Renew Your Michigan Nursing License
- Check your record. Sign in to MiPLUS, Michigan's online licensing system, to confirm your expiration date.
- Complete your hours. Finish at least 25 hours of approved continuing education, including 2 hours of pain and symptom management and your implicit bias training, during the two years before your license expires.
- Save your certificates. Keep proof of completion for 4 years after you renew (6 years for implicit bias training). If you are audited, you will upload documentation to CE Broker.
- Start your renewal. Renew online in MiPLUS before your expiration date.
- Certify your continuing education. Submitting the renewal application certifies that you met the continuing education requirements.
- Pay the fee. The two-year renewal fee for RNs and LPNs is $131.
- Confirm your renewal. Verify that your license shows the new expiration date, and keep your certificates.
