- Iowa licensed resident insurance producers renewing a license with long-term care authority
- Producers who need 8 approved hours toward the 36-hour Iowa requirement

- New producers building a working foundation in this coverage area
- Experienced agents refreshing before a renewal deadline
- Agency staff who support producers and want the same technical grounding
β Does This Course Satisfy the State Requirement?
This course is designed to satisfy the one-time initial long-term care insurance training required before selling long-term care products, and it provides 8 approved credit hours toward the 36-hour Iowa renewal total. It does not satisfy the full renewal requirement or the 3-hour ethics requirement.
β Iowa Continuing Education Requirements
Iowa is one of the few states on a three-year cycle. Iowa resident producers complete 36 credits of Division-approved continuing education during each three-year CE term, and 3 of those credits must be in ethics. A credit equals 50 minutes of instruction. Iowa does not cap self-study, so an approved online course may be used for any portion of the 36 credits. Excess credits do not carry forward, and the Division must receive proof of completion by the end of the last business day of the CE term.
- 36 credits of Division-approved continuing education per three-year CE term β Iowa is not a two-year state
- 3 of those 36 credits must be in ethics
- One credit equals 50 minutes of instruction
- No self-study cap. Iowa does not limit how many credits may be earned through approved self-study or online courses
- Producers who sell long-term care or LTC partnership products must complete a one-time 8-credit training before selling, and at least 4 credits of ongoing LTC training each CE term thereafter
- Excess credits cannot be carried over from one CE term to the next
- Producers holding only crop lines have a reduced 18-credit requirement; credit-only and surety-only producers are exempt
How this course helps: This 8-hour course is the one-time initial long-term care training a producer completes before selling, soliciting or negotiating long-term care insurance, and it covers the Qualified State Long-Term Care Partnership content that training must include. It also provides 8 approved credit hours toward your 36-hour Iowa renewal total. It does not satisfy the separate 3-hour ethics requirement, and ongoing long-term care training is still required in each later cycle.
β When Do Licensees Renew?
Iowa producer licenses are valid for three years and expire on the last day of the licensee's birth month. Because the term is anchored to the birth month rather than the issue date, an initial term can run somewhat longer than 36 months β confirm your exact expiration date on your license record rather than calculating it. Continuing education must be complete and reported by the end of the CE term, and the renewal application is filed in the window before expiration. There is no grace period to continue transacting business, though an expired license may be reinstated within twelve months by proving the CE that was due for the term that ended.
β How to Renew Your License
Step 1: Look up your exact expiration date
Iowa runs a three-year term ending the last day of your birth month. Confirm the date on your license record instead of calculating it.
Step 2: Review your CE transcript for the current term
Check how many of the 36 credits are posted and whether your 3 ethics credits are among them.
Step 3: Complete 36 credits, including 3 ethics credits
Finish the full requirement before the end of your CE term. Only Iowa Insurance Divisionβapproved courses count.
Step 4: Allow for provider reporting time
Approved providers report completions to the Division on a monthly cycle. Finish early enough that the Division receives your proof before the last business day of your CE term.
Step 5: Confirm the credits posted
View your education transcript and verify each course appears with the correct credit count and category.
Step 6: File the renewal and pay the fee
Submit the renewal application and fee through the online licensing system Iowa directs producers to, during the renewal window before expiration.
Step 7: Keep your certificates for four years
Iowa requires producers to keep original certificates of completion for four years after the end of the year of attendance. Save them and confirm your license shows active.

Integrating long-term care with retirement and estate planning, including realistic funding sources. Covers affordability levers such as adjusting benefit period, daily benefit and elimination period; household and caregiver considerations including respite benefits; plain-language trade-off discussions; responses to post-issue health changes; and building an annual review cadence.
