✅ Who Should Take This Course?
- Licensed property and casualty agents and producers
- Personal lines producers who quote and service homeowners policies
- Agents who write in coastal or high-wind territories
- Producers who field roof, wind and hail claim questions
- Agency staff who explain deductibles and loss settlement to clients
- Agents who need property and casualty credit toward Connecticut's renewal total
✅ Does This Course Satisfy the State Requirement?
This course provides 4 approved hours toward the 24 credit hours a Connecticut resident producer must complete in each two-year licence period. It does not satisfy the requirement on its own, and it is general credit – it does not count toward the 3 hours of Laws, Regulations and Ethics (LRE) that Connecticut also requires.
Connecticut places no cap on self-study or online hours, so all 4 hours count in full. After this course you will need the balance of your 24 hours, including the 3-hour Laws, Regulations and Ethics (LRE) requirement, from separately approved courses.
✅ Connecticut Continuing Education Requirements
Connecticut requires 24 hours of approved continuing education in each two-year licence period, and 3 of those 24 must be in Laws, Regulations and Ethics – the category Connecticut abbreviates as LRE. The LRE hours sit inside the 24 rather than on top of them. A producer may generally take courses in any line of authority, although the Department recommends taking them in the lines you actually write.
- 24 credit hours of approved continuing education in each two-year period
- 3 of the 24 must be Laws, Regulations and Ethics (LRE) credit
- Licences renew by the last day of your birth month, every two years
- No cap on self-study or online hours – all 24 may be completed online
- Up to 24 hours may be carried forward into the next period; surplus LRE credit carries as general credit
- The same course cannot be repeated for credit inside one renewal period
Connecticut also carries three separate product-training gates that sit outside the general 24. Selling Partnership long-term care products requires the one-time Long-Term Care Partnership training. Selling annuities requires a state-approved 4-hour annuity suitability course. And as of 15 April 2026 newly licensed Property & Casualty and Personal Lines producers must complete a one-time 3-hour NFIP flood course. Nonresident producers, adjusters, and licensees holding only credit, travel accident or surety bail bond authority are exempt from the 24-hour requirement.
How this course helps: This 4-hour course contributes 4 of the 24 credit hours required in each two-year licence period. It is general credit, so it does not count toward the 3-hour Laws, Regulations and Ethics (LRE) requirement. The balance of your 24 hours must be completed separately.
✅ When Do Licensees Renew?
Connecticut producer licences renew every two years, by the last day of your birth month. The cycle is tied to your birthday rather than to a fixed statewide date, so two producers in the same agency can have different deadlines. Confirm your own date on your licence record rather than assuming, and remember that continuing education has to be complete and reported before you renew – being CE-compliant and paying the renewal fee are two separate steps.
✅ How to Renew Your Connecticut License
- Confirm your renewal date and the lines of authority on your licence. Your date is the last day of your birth month, every second year.
- Work out what you still owe: 24 hours in total, of which 3 must be Laws, Regulations and Ethics.
- Check whether any product-training gate applies to you – annuity suitability, Long-Term Care Partnership, or the one-time NFIP flood course required of newly licensed Property & Casualty and Personal Lines producers since 15 April 2026.
- Complete your hours from courses individually approved in Connecticut. Approval in another state does not carry over.
- Allow reporting time before your deadline. 1st Choice CE reports your completion to the Department; do not leave it to the final days.
- Check your transcript and confirm the LRE hours posted in the LRE category rather than as general credit.
- Renew your licence and confirm it shows active with an updated expiration date.
Carryover is generous in Connecticut by comparison with most states – up to 24 hours move forward into the next period – but surplus LRE credit carries as general credit only, so it will not pre-satisfy the next period's 3-hour LRE requirement. A course cannot be repeated for credit inside the same renewal period.
✅ What You Will Learn
- Identify the standard homeowners forms and which risk each one fits
- Explain Coverages A through F and what each is actually there to pay
- Apply residency and occupancy conditions before a coverage dispute arises
- Distinguish named-peril from open-peril coverage in plain language a client understands
- Explain percentage wind, hail and hurricane deductibles and roof payment schedules before a storm
- Recognize when a risk belongs in the surplus lines or residual windstorm market
✅ Course Content Overview
Hour 1 – Homeowners Policy Forms and Coverage Structure
The homeowners policy forms and common dwelling policy structures, and how to choose between them. Covers the coverage parts for dwelling, other structures, personal property, loss of use and the liability sections; insured location concepts and why they matter for a client with more than one property; and the declarations items that drive everything else in the policy.
Hour 2 – Perils, Exclusions, Deductibles and High-Impact Endorsements
Perils insured against and the major exclusions, followed by wind and hail provisions, hurricane deductibles and roof-related limitations such as actual cash value roof settlement and roof age restrictions. Covers water damage and mold or fungi limitations, the endorsements written to address them, and the additional options an agent should be offering by default.
Hour 3 – Loss Settlement, Claims Handling and Risk Management for Homes
Loss settlement basics, including replacement cost, actual cash value, coinsurance and the effect of underinsurance on a partial loss. Covers the insured's duties after a loss, the applicable timelines and communication practices, the common claim categories and how each is handled, and the underwriting and loss prevention concepts that keep a risk insurable.
Hour 4 – Regional Market Realities, Coastal Windstorm Placement and Compliance Expectations
Current homeowners market trends and what has changed in availability and pricing. Covers coastal windstorm and last-resort placement concepts, the catastrophe-driven exposures reshaping capacity, and the compliance and consumer-protection practices that apply when coverage is restricted, non-renewed or placed outside the admitted market.
