β Does This Course Satisfy the California Requirement?
This course provides 4 of the 30 contact hours California registered nurses need every two years. It does not satisfy the full renewal requirement by itself. Because California does not require specific subjects for most RN renewals, these hours count toward your 30-hour total when you complete them during your current renewal period.
This course includes implicit bias content, as California requires for every nursing course with a direct patient care component. It is not a dedicated implicit bias course, so it does not satisfy the separate one-hour implicit bias course required of nurses in their first two years of licensure.
Need all 30 hours? The 30 Hour California RN Complete Renewal Package includes this course and 13 others for $39.99.
β California RN Continuing Education Requirements
The California Board of Registered Nursing requires registered nurses to complete 30 contact hours of continuing education every two years to renew an active license. Courses must come from a provider the BRN recognizes, and online courses are accepted.
- Total hours: 30 contact hours every two-year renewal period
- Required subjects: No subject-hour breakdown for most RN renewals; courses must be relevant to nursing practice
- Format: Online and home-study courses are accepted
- Providers: Courses must come from a BRN-recognized provider whose provider number is active
- First renewal: Nurses renewing for the first time within two years of initial licensure are exempt from the 30 hours, but must complete a one-hour implicit bias course (required since January 1, 2023)
- Records: Keep certificates for four years; the BRN audits RNs at random
- Inactive or lapsed licenses: Returning to active status generally requires 30 hours completed within the prior two years
How this course helps: This 4-hour course contributes 4 contact hours toward the 30 contact hours California RNs must complete every two years. California does not require a specific subject breakdown for most RN renewals, so these hours apply to your general total. You will still need 26 more contact hours from BRN-recognized providers to complete your renewal.
β When Do California RNs Renew?
California RN licenses renew every two years. Your license expires on the last day of your birth month, and your exact expiration date appears on your license record in BreEZe, the BRN's online licensing system.
The BRN mails a renewal notice about three months before your license expires, but you are responsible for renewing even if the notice never arrives. You can renew no earlier than three months before your expiration date. A renewal submitted after the expiration date costs more and leaves you unable to practice until the license is active again.
The continuing education you report must be completed during the renewal period that is ending, so plan to finish all 30 hours before you submit.
β How to Renew Your California RN License
- Check your record. Look up your license status and expiration date in BreEZe.
- Complete your hours. Finish 30 contact hours from BRN-recognized providers during your renewal period, or the one-hour implicit bias course if this is your first renewal.
- Save your certificates. Each certificate shows the provider name and number, course title, completion date, and hours.
- Sign in to BreEZe. Within three months of your expiration date, log in to BreEZe Online Services and start your renewal.
- Answer the renewal questions. Confirm your continuing education, enter course details if asked, and complete the required disclosures.
- Pay the fee. The BRN's fee schedule lists $190 for an on-time active renewal.
- Confirm and keep records. Verify that your license shows the new expiration date, and keep your certificates for four years.
