Complete a 1-hour California BRN-approved implicit bias course built to all ten content elements California sets for the implicit bias training required of nurses in their first two years of licensure, for only $14.99. It is a dedicated implicit bias course, not a general course with a short bias section, and it also counts as 1 contact hour toward the 30-hour RN renewal.
Work at your own pace and log in and out as often as you like without losing your progress. There is no final exam. Complete each section and a short course evaluation, and your certificate of completion is emailed to you immediately. California nurses report their own continuing education to the BRN when they renew, so save your certificate for four years in case you are selected for an audit.

β Who Should Take This Course?
This course is written for:
- California registered nurses renewing for the first time within two years of initial licensure
- New graduate nurses and recently licensed RNs
- Nurse practitioners and other advanced practice nurses renewing an RN license
- Perinatal, labor and delivery, and maternal health nurses
- Nurse leaders and educators
- Any California nurse who wants a focused implicit bias course
β Does This Course Satisfy the California Requirement?
Business and Professions Code section 2811.5(h) exempts nurses from the 30-hour requirement during the first two years after initial licensure, but requires them to complete one hour of direct participation in an implicit bias course that meets the content requirements of section 2786(f)(1). This course is built to cover all ten of those elements.
The law uses the words "direct participation." The BRN accepts online and home study courses for the 30-hour requirement, but if this is your first renewal, confirm with the BRN that an online course meets your one-hour implicit bias requirement before you rely on it.
For nurses past their first renewal, this course provides 1 of the 30 contact hours required every two years.
β California RN Continuing Education Requirements
The California Board of Registered Nursing requires registered nurses to complete 30 contact hours of continuing education every two years to renew an active license, with a special rule for nurses in their first two years of licensure.
- Total hours: 30 contact hours every two-year renewal period
- First renewal: Nurses renewing for the first time within two years of initial licensure are exempt from the 30 hours, but must complete one hour of direct participation in an implicit bias course (required since January 1, 2023)
- Implicit bias course content: The one-hour course must meet the content requirements of Business and Professions Code section 2786(f)(1), which lists ten required elements
- Implicit bias in every course: Every California nursing CE course with a direct patient care component must include implicit bias content
- Format: Online and home-study courses are accepted for the 30 hours
- Records: Keep certificates for four years; the BRN audits RNs at random
How this course helps: For a first-time renewer, this 1-hour course is built to cover the ten content elements required for the one-hour implicit bias course; confirm with the BRN that online completion meets your requirement. For other RNs, it contributes 1 of the 30 contact hours required every two years, and you will still need 29 more.
β When Do California RNs Renew?
California RN licenses renew every two years. Your license expires on the last day of your birth month, and your exact expiration date appears on your license record in BreEZe, the BRN's online licensing system.
The BRN mails a renewal notice about three months before your license expires, but you are responsible for renewing even if the notice never arrives. You can renew no earlier than three months before your expiration date. A renewal submitted after the expiration date costs more and leaves you unable to practice until the license is active again.
The continuing education you report must be completed during the renewal period that is ending, so plan to finish your hours before you submit.
β How to Renew Your California RN License
- Check your record. Look up your license status and expiration date in BreEZe.
- Complete your hours. Finish 30 contact hours from BRN-recognized providers during your renewal period, or the one-hour implicit bias course if this is your first renewal.
- Save your certificates. Each certificate shows the provider name and number, course title, completion date, and hours.
- Sign in to BreEZe. Within three months of your expiration date, log in to BreEZe Online Services and start your renewal.
- Answer the renewal questions. Confirm your continuing education, enter course details if asked, and complete the required disclosures.
- Pay the fees. The BRN's fee schedule lists $190 for an on-time active RN renewal.
- Confirm and keep records. Verify that your license shows the new expiration date, and keep your certificates for four years.
